Mauritania: wave of arrests of political opponents and imams

No democracy while refugees are still abroad and no justice unless
their rights are fully reinstated
Our country opened, seventeen years ago, the darkest pages of its
history. At that time, public authority was used to organize massive and
bloody deportations within the ethnic-African populations. At the same time,
a racist and murderous cleansing took place within the military
institution. The magnitude of these facts is such that their minimization
or denial could compromise the existence of our country and the unity of our
people.
The CMJD who committed itself to laying down the foundation of true Democracy and Justice in the country, must know that Democracy is meaningless unless it involves all the citizens, and that Justice will last only if they all recover their rights in full. Bringing our wrongfully expelled refugees in Senegal and Mali, back with respect and dignity, is a condition for the success of the democratic project.

The Mauritanian executive branch persists on wrongfully accusing prisoners of
opinion
It is the responsibility of the MHRW to accurately inform the national and
international community, about the prisoners of opinion the Mauritanian
executive accuses of violence and connection with extremist groups.
There is indeed no controversy over the fact that these are mainly innocent
imams, who have been arrested a year ago by the ousted regime of Ould Taya.It is also known that the former regime's goal behind these arrests, was to create the belief of a terrorist threat in Mauritania and enjoy, as a consequence, some political and financial support from the United States of America.
The charges are pure fabrication, and are almost laughable for whoever knows the strictly peaceful activities of the oldest among the prisoners, namely the scholars Sheik Nawawi, director of the traditional university of "Bir Al-Khaïr" and Imam Abdallahi Ould Aminou, who is in charge of cultural and charity activities at the Al-Ikhlas mosque.

Mauritania: Political prisoners start a hunger strike
According to the Mauritanian Human Rights Watch's sources, the conditions in which political prisoners in Mauritania are retained, have significantly worsened in the aftermath of the verdict. The four following prisoners:
Saleh Ould Hananna
- Abdarrahmane Ould Minni
- Mohamed Lemine Ould War
- Sidi Mohamed Ould Hremou
are placed in solitary confinement, have chains day and night and are not allowed access to the toilets. The conditions of the other prisoners are not any better. They are gathered in a narrow and nauseous place and are not allowed any families nor lawyers visits. These conditions constitute an obvious violation of Human Rights as well as the Mauritanian law.
