No to the Coup D’etat against the Constitutional legitimacy in Mauritania!!
Press release
Washington, D.C. August 24, 2008
The Mauritanian Human Rights Watch is following with chock and grief the news of the coup d’etat that took place in Mauritania on August 6, 2008, and the arrest of the democratically elected president of our country. Driven by their selfish ambitions, some of our country’s military leaders ignored the will of their people and the interests of the country and its institutions. By their coup d’etat against the legitimate leadership they are oppressing their people and opening the doors anew for violence and chaos in our country. Unfortunately none of this was surprising, since there were many indications that those military officers were preparing the ground for a coup d’etat supported by the defeated remnants of the disgraced regime of the former dictator Maouiya Ould Taya.
Based on our firm belief at the Mauritanian Human Rights Watch that our people should rule themselves without coercion, and should protect their democratic institutions:
We condemn the illegitimate coup d’etat that is taking our country back to the era of oppression, injustice and corruption that have been exhausting the resources of our people for decades.
We condemn the assault on the constitutional institutions of our people from few military leaders who have no principle beyond their thirst for power.
We condemn the illegal arrest of the elected president Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdellah, and we urge the military junta to free him immediately and to restore him in his position.
We welcome and appreciate the stand of the American government, the French government, the European Union and the African Union for refusing to give legitimacy for the military junta in Mauritania.
We affirm that the position of the presidency can be earned only through the free vote of the people, and the military institution should not interfere in the political process.
We urge political parties and the organizations of the civil society in Mauritania to work hand in hand in order to restore the constitutional institutions in whose creation everyone has contributed.
We warn all the political forces in Mauritania to avoid cooperating with the military junta for selfish and shortsighted reasons, because that will be a gross betrayal of the cause of our oppressed people.
